The Town of Herndon is located about 22 miles north-west of downtown Washington, DC. Herndon spans an area of 4.2 square miles and is home to over 23,000 residents spread across 7,400 households at the time of the 2010 United States Census. Housing is comprised of a mix of condominiums, townhomes, duplexes, and single-family homes. Every Herndon residence is within a mile or less of a public park.

Local attractions include the Herndon ArtSpace gallery, Herndon Depot Museum, and the Herndon Centennial Golf Course. A community and aquatic center is located next to Bready Park. It includes multiple baseball fields, together with basketball and racquetball courts. Indoor tennis courts are available in Bready Park itself. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the National Air and Space Museum is located in nearby Chantilly. The museum houses the Enola Gay B-29 Superfortress, a Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk, an SR-71A Blackbird reconnaissance jet, a Concorde supersonic passenger airplane, and the Space Shuttle Discovery.
